Biographical Sketch

 

 

    •  Born in Independence, Missouri. Graduated from William Chrisman High School.

    •  Early 50s, played around Kansas City and toured with various bands.

    • 1956 toured Europe with Claude Thornhill Orchestra

    • 1957-58 toured with The Woody Herman Band

    • 1959-69 Sales Mgr., Cole Music Co. - Raytown, MO

    • 1969-73 Store Mgr., Jenkins Music Co. - Kansas City, MO

    • 1973-1980 National. Sales Mgr., Stanbury Uniform Co. - Brookfield, MO

    • 1981 Jazz Anyone? Publishing Co. - Brookfield, MO

    • 1982-1998 District Sales. Mgr., United Music Instruments USA, Inc. - Elkhart, Indiana

    • During 1959-98 served as adjudicator for Jazz Band Festivals, taught Jazz Bands at Summer Music Camps, member of Kansas City Jazz, Inc., appeared several consecutive years with Clark Terry in the annual Kansas City Jazz Festivals, and other performances.

    • In Kansas City, played trombone with the Warren Durrett Orchestra until Warren retired.

    • In 1976, recipient of the first annual Jesse Cole Award, for contributions to jazz education, presented by the Missouri Chapter of the International Jazz Educators. In 1990 became sponsor of the award.

    • In 1991 received the Kansas City Jazz Heritage Award presented by the Mayor of Kansas City, MO, Emanuel Cleaver, and sponsored by the Kansas City Jazz Commission.

    • Former member of the International Trombone Association and the International Association for Jazz Education.

    • Chapter Honorary member of the Beta Mu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma.

    • In July of 1997 recognized by the Kansas Bandmaster Association and Phi Beta Mu for "Outstanding Contributions To Bands".

    • Retired from United Musical Instruments in 1997, receiving the "UMI Lifetime Achievement Award".

    • In January of 1998, received the "Russell and Dorothy Chambers Award For Distinguished Service to Music Education in Missouri", presented by the Missouri Music Educators Association.

    • 1998, recorded and released CD titled "two guys from kansas city ONE MORE TIME" by Arch Martin and Ed Dix.

    • 1999, inducted into the Music Hall of Fame at William Chrisman High School, Independence, MO.

    • 2002, inducted in the "Elder Statesmen of Kansas City Jazz".
